of real interest but the aim of the visit -the Mineral collection has minerals of World Significance

-There is an option if you wish to visit the garden for an additonal fee afterwards.)Porthluney Beach is

also available to visit afterwards, the western side has closely cleaved dipping metamorphosed

shaley and sandy sediments which contain olistoliths the oldest rocks in Cornwall. These are

'exotic'rocks that have been incorporated by the movement of the thrust faults and are thought to

be Ordovician and Silurian. These clasts can be white to pale grey quarzites and black limestone.

Quarzite clasts are rare but can contain fossils and are within the Roseland Breccias thought to

result from submarine slides. Some of the olistoliths contain Trinucleid Trilobites.

The western side of the beach has sliding along steeply dipping cleavage planes. The eastern side

has caves in a brown metamorphosed sedimentary rock which contains microfossils of Lower

Devonian age -400 million years-if you intend to explore be warned about the slippages and coastal

erosion due to prolonged rain. But you must take boots to cross the river to get top the exposures.

Take a digital camera to photograph specimens rather than hammers and then someone else
